Notes: Born in Wisconsin, his family moved to St. Florian, Alabama, when he was about a year old. The 1880 Federal Census lists him living with William and Maria Mecke as a servant. In the same census he is Alabamaso listed as living at home with his family. In 1900 he was working as a laborer in St. Florian. When his step-father, Lorence Specker died in 1901 he took care of his mother until her death in 1916. Sometime between then and the 1920 Federal Census he had moved his family to Gibson, Ohio, except for his youngest daughter who stayed with her grandparents in St. Florian. In the 1930 Federal Census he was living with the family of his son, Leo.

Notes: Baptized in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Godparents were James Wurm & Catherine Specker In the 1910 Federal Census he is living in the home of Frank Wolfinger in St. Florian, and working as a hired hand. His WWI draft registration card gives his date of birth as 1893. He was living in Rock Valley, Iowa, and working as a farm laborer. The 1920 Federal Census indicates that he moved with his family to Gibson, Ohio. The 1930 Federal Census has him living in Garfield, Iowa, lodging in the home of Emma Splear, with an occupation of farming, so he may have acted as a farmhand for Emma. Eventually, he married Emma, who was 10 years his senior. He received his SSN in Minnesota, and died in Shelton, Washington at the age of 97.

Spouse Notes: Emma was married in 1899 to Henry Splear, who was 8 years her senior. She was married in Iowa, so must have immigrated to the U.S. from the Netherlands before her 17th birthday. The 1910 Federal Census indicated that she had 7 children since she was married, but only 2 were living at that time. By the 1920 Federal Census she had become a naturalized citizen. In the 1930 Federal Census she was widowed and John was her employee and lodger. Her occupation was listed as "farmerette". She married John in 1936 at the age of 54. She died 8 years later.

Notes: The 1910 Federal Census has him working for John Kemper as a hired hand. He registred for the WWI draft in Lauderdale County, Alabama, and inducted into the military on July 24, 1918, therefore was a WWI veteran. The 1920 Federal Census has him in Gibson, Ohio, in his father's home, and married. The 1930 Federal Census has him and his family in Washington, OH, and his widowed father was living with him. He registred for the WWII draft in Mercer County, OH, in 1942, at the age of 48.
