The following is told by Mary [Rasch] Alt: "The one I love to tell about is how he saved my life on June 23, 1978. A semi-truck ran a stop sign in Alpine Twp. He thought he could get through the intersection before me. He did not. My car hit his spare tire carrier and his truck dragged my car 350 feet until it stopped. Phil did not know who I was, but just organized the complicated efforts of the fire department to get the trailer off my car and off my legs. It was a success and I am here to tell about it. Both of my legs were broken and it took all the efforts of Phil and his department, plus all who worked on me at St. Mary's hospital in Grand Rapids to keep me alive. I will be forever grateful to them for doing a good job! On November 18, 1978, I was out of the wheelchair and walked down the aisle of St. Joseph's Church, in Wright, to marry Bill Alt.
