He was the only son of Florian Rasch to stay in the Detroit area. He was one of the first merchant tailors in Detroit, arriving in the area in 1854. He opened his merchant taylor establishment in 1857 in the old Biddle house. He later moved his business, August Rasch & Co., to 79 Woodward Ave. He remained in business until 1890 before retiring. The 1910 Federal Census has him and his grandson Stuart living with his daughter and son-in-law Caroline [Rasch] and William Allen in Detroit Ward 5. He was one of the early philanthropists of the city, a contributor to many public enterprises.
