Reference article states that he arrived in the US in 1854, and lived in Macomb county, MI, until the outbreak of the Civil War. Civil War Vet, served in the Union Army, Co. H, 2nd reg't of the Michigan Cavalry from October 2, 1861 thru the end of the war in 1865. Physical description of him at age 21 from the time of his enlistment: height 5' 6.5", light completion, blue eyes, brown hair. His occupation is given as farmer. After the War he worked for his brother Julius as a clerk in the grocery business in Grand Rapids, MI. He became a partner in the business, called Rasch Brothers, in 1872, and took over the business when Julius died. He picked up a Confederate sword at the Battle of Shiloh, threw his own sword away and carried it the rest of the war. According to family stories, after the Civil War on rainy days, when he did not open the store, Alois would sometimes come up to the attic, where his son Walter and a brother shared a room, and do the Manual of Arms with the sword while the boys sat on their cot, the sword flashing by their heads.
