Birth Date: November 26, 1833
Birth Place: Oldersdorf (near Frankenstein, present day Zabkowice Slaskie), Silesia, Prussia
Baptism Date: March 26, 1833
Baptism Place: Parish church in Protzan, Silesia, Prussia
Religion: R. Catholic
Death Date: July 6, 1912
Death Place: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Burial Date: July 8, 1912
Burial Place: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Father:
Florian Franz Rasch I (1791-1855)
Mother: Barbara [Gutkorn] (1804-1843)
Notes:
According to church baptismal records her name was Josepha Franziska Augustine Rasch.
Census Records have Adolph and Frances immigrating in 1854. In 1857 Frances came to
Grand Rapids, met and married Joseph, who was a prominent businessman. The 1870
Federal Census has their last name spelled Jacobvia. She left the family their mother's bible;
a small book written in German, probably used at her wedding. According to her obituary,
she had a total of 10 children.
Frances was part owner of "The Rasch House," an early Grand Rapids hostelry. The hotel
was located in an area described as Germantown because of the Germans dominating the scene.
She died of cancer at the age of 78.

Joseph Jackoboice (picture)
Birth Date: March 16, 1824
Birth Place: Town Of Kalisz On Prussian-Polish Border
Religion: R. Catholic
Occupation: Machinist
Death Date: 1899
Death Place: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Burial Place: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Spouse Notes:
Immigrated from Poland (in 1844) via Germany (in 1852) to America. Lived in New York City
for 2.5 years, then journeyed to Grand Rapids in 1854. He became the first Polish immigrant
to settle in the city of Grand Rapids in 1855.
In 1855/56 Joseph began working as a machinist for others. In 1860 he opened his first
machine shop, on Mill Street. It was one of the first machine shops in Grand Rapids.
In 1862 he moved the operation to the "Germantown" district around Canal and E. Bridge
streets. He manufactured steam engines, fire escapes, sawmill machines and woodworking
machines. He had several successive shops in the downtown area. In 1880 he founded the
West Side Iron Works and continued manufacturing a variety of machines until his retirement
in 1895 (died in 1899).
Joseph's son Edward Joseph maintained the family business as the West Side Iron Works until
1921, then as the Edward J. Jackoboice Company until 1931, then as the Monarch Road Machinery
Company until his death in 1935 (and beyond). The family business changed its name again
in 1983 to Monarch Hydraulics, Inc.
The family of Joseph and Frances Jackoboice flourished at their residence on Broadway
Ave., N.W., where later the Convent of St. Mary's Church would be built. They were
charter members of the pioneer Catholic parish.

Father: Joseph Jackoboice (1824-1899)

Notes:
Edward Joseph and his father Joseph manufactured numerous machines for sawmills, furniture
companies and others. Joseph invented a lumber-recording device. Edward Joseph co-patented
a sanding machine and a glue-jointing machine. Edward worked with his father at the
West Side Iron Works from 1880 until Joseph's retirement in 1895. Edward built a steam-powered
boat, and later a steam-powered automobile (in 1897, said to be the fourth car in Grand Rapids).
Edward transitioned out of the manufacture of woodworking machines. In 1921 he sold the
West Side Iron Works business to the Chicago Machinery Exchange. In 1922 he founded the
Edward J. Jackoboice Company and focused on the manufacture of road maintenance machinery,
mainly road grader "road scraper" blades with early hydraulics (eventually developing a
reversible blade). This type of machinery, which revolutionized the maintenance of dirt and
gravel roads, is used across America. In 1931 Edward Joseph's two sons, Edward William
and George A. Jackoboice, joined the family business and renamed it the Monarch Road Machinery
Company. In Edward Joseph's final leisure years, he likely continued enjoying travel,
hunting and fishing. He passed away in 1935.

Death Date: December 4, 2012
Death Place: Naples, Florida
Father:
Edward William Jackoboice
Mother: Mildred M. Lanfear
Notes:
Ed (also known as Jim) was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended East
Grand Rapids High School and played football (as a big tackle). He also attended Michigan
State University, was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and graduated in 1957.
Returning to Grand Rapids, in 1958 he revived the family's West Side Iron Works
(1880-1921). In that old schoolhouse/machine shop he assembled and marketed street
barricades for several years. See company history online
here.
Ed later became an owner, VP and Director of Engineering for the family's hydraulics
factory - the Monarch Road Machinery Company (later renamed Monarch Hydraulics, Inc.) of
Grand Rapids. He co-directed the company for over two decades. He patented a snowplow
"Back blade assembly and control" (1970), co-patented a "High speed hydraulic pump"
(1971), and co-patented a "Hydraulic control valve" (1974). He enjoyed working in "the
shop" and promotional work at industry conventions. He retired in 1990.
Wintering in Naples, Florida for years, Ed and wife Sandy moved there in 2010.
Ed was a life-long outdoorsman - hunting deer, ducks, geese, pheasant and ruffed grouse
(and as requested, was buried with an empty shotgun shell). He also enjoyed fishing,
boating, sailing. And he earned a pilot's license and flew small planes.
He was active in the community. He was a member of the Kent County Conservation League,
the Thornapple River Association, Ducks Unlimited, the Polish Heritage Society, St.
Robert's Parish, and the Army Reserve.
Ed was a world traveler, working and/or touring in more than 100 countries. Following in
the footsteps of his Uncle George, he began visiting Poland in the 1980s for genealogical
research.
Through the years, Ed sponsored foreign students so they could live in America and share
the American dream.
In 2008, Edward James' son Edward Michael commenced research into family/business
history, online and on-site, and in books, articles and archives. A journalist,
Mike has written related articles and a growing "book" of 275 pages for posterity
(with maps, charts, photos, etc.). One abridged version of the book is planned for

Notes:
Like every Jackoboice, Mike is actually a Jakóbowicz (the family's original Polish surname,
pronounced Yah-koob-o-vitch). Mike grew up in East Grand Rapids, walking to school
near Reeds Lake. And he "helped" his dad at the old West Side Iron Works. At age 10,
the family moved to Ada. In high school Mike was a summer exchange student in
Switzerland, played football on a championship team, and graduated from Forest Hills
Central (as class president 1974-77). During college he worked at the White Grass Ranch
in Jackson Hole, Wyoming as a cowboy in the Teton Range, and as a river rafting guide.
He graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a Journalism
degree (1981), then drove up the Alaska Highway. As News Director at radio stations
in Alaska (1980s), he also covered the Iditarod and other sled dog races from Bethel to
the Brooks Range. Mike served in the Civil Air Patrol (search & rescue). And he worked
in the oil industry: on the North Slope in seismic exploration (until stalked by a polar bear)
... and in the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup as a VIP cabin cruiser chef, deckhand and
skipper. Reading the entire Bible, and reading a page a day, Mike was the first in the
family to leave Roman Catholicism (1987). Sharing biblical Christianity he served as
an Evangelical Protestant missionary in Nepal and India (hospitals, prisons, 1988-89)
... and in Quito, Ecuador (HCJB World Radio interim International News Director, 1990)
... and in Santiago and Los Andes, Chile (SIM Pacific Andes Area mission journalist
with assignments in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina; and library and prison ministries, 1990-97).
From 1997 to 2018+ in Las Cruces, New Mexico and enjoying Gospel outreach (Luke 24:45-47)
through tracts, Bible correspondence lessons, and Spanish presentations in county jails
(mainly in El Paso, Texas). Attendance at SBC Baptist churches and other Christ-centered
churches. Hobbies: camping, hiking, fishing, photography, reading history and writing history
as published online. In 2017 the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
published his research in their website. See Collections and type/search title:
"Jakóbowicz (Jakobowicz, Jakubowicz) surname variants in Holocaust records (ghettos, trains,

Notes:
Family tradition has it that Clara assisted Oscar Rasch in researching the
Rasch Genealogy. She traveled to Germany in the early 1930's, visited the
village of Obersdorf, was shown the house in which the family lived, then
taken to the local parish church and shown letters the "Rasch brothers" had
written to the church asking for prayers as they had never been to sea and
were afraid of the long voyage to America.
The 1910 Federal Census has her still living in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her
aged widowed mother. In the 1920 Federal Census Clare was listed as a
lodger in a Los Angeles hotel.
Helen [Gast] Jackoboice remembers her Aunt Clara this way: "She was a world
traveler. She went with a pretty high class group of older ladies. They
were wonderful." Clara remembered the day that they were listening to the
radio with reports of getting into the War. Aunt Clara told everyone how
poor everyone was in those other countries. Helen said it was so sad that
Aunt Clara's eye sight was so poor. "She could have written many books on
all of this. Aunt Clara lived in a hotel in California."
